Strategies for IT staffing

One of today’s business challenges centers around IT staffing.

Is your business struggling to hire and keep qualified IT staff?  If so, you are not alone. Some of the most common staffing challenges facing IT departments today include:

1. Managing organizations through changing industry demands, regulation, and operations.

As organizations change their existing strategy and vision, there is frequently a need for change with technology and required staff.

2. Excessive staff workloads.

This can lead to errors in routine work, as well as staff becoming resentful due to additional duties that may impact their work-life balance. Management may be pressured to hire additional staff.

3. Maintaining, training, and retention of qualified staff.

It is important to limit the impact staffing issues could have on your organization. With technology constantly changing, it is becoming harder for organizations to keep up-to-date with technology. In some organizations training is considered a cost instead of an investment, which then limits the amount of training that can be offered.

4. Recruiting high skilled resources, while cutting down on per-hire-cost.

This can be a challenge because in today’s marketing for hiring IT resources, it has become more of an employee’s market. When considering cutting costs you may have a difficult time finding the proper resource for the job.

3 IT staffing models, including In-House, Hybrid, and Full Outsourcing

The In-House model keeps the information within the organization, but has to manage higher cost resources to conduct the work effort. Retaining resources and developing a training strategy should be a focus in this model.

The Hybrid model is similar to a staff augmentation and outsourcing model focused on either project work or helpdesk work efforts. In this model you have access to distinct skills from the vendor, but then have to manage the vendor regularly to ensure quality is delivered. The Hybrid model allows you to limit the onboarding expenditures and control your costs for the activities managed by the vendor. This model is also flexible in regards to terms of agreement – for example if you have a 3-month project, you can have a resource for 3 months.

The Full Outsourcing model allows you to focus more on your core business and other initiatives and creates redundancy of resources available by allowing you access to different skills within the vendor’s resource pools. In the Full Outsourcing model, it is usually considered a long-term commitment and investment for your organization. You can also benefit from a decrease in training costs for your organization, while also ensuring that your organization is up-to-date on the latest technology through the vendor partnership.

The Industry Trend is Managed Services

Managed Services is a strategic method for continuously improving operations and reducing risk in your organization. Some areas of focus for Managed Services Providers (MSPs) are Monitoring, Support Remediation, Infrastructure Management, Security Compliance, and Reporting.

When deciding on a Managed Services Provider you should consider researching their experience and obtaining client references. It is important to create clear guidelines regarding the types of activities you want your MSP to do for you and to make sure that expectations are agreed upon before the engagement begins. You will also want to build your own strategy to evaluate your MSP. This could be monitoring the number of tickets reported and determining the impact on your business if you did not have a MSP. You will also want to make sure that you meet with your Managed Services Provider on a regular basis to ensure the partnership will continue to grow within the set expectations.
