I recently ran into a scenario where we assisted a client in setting up an O365 Trial Tenant while they worked out licensing with their volume reseller and several internal application compatibility issues. We set up AD Connect, synced their user accounts, and waited for licenses to be associated from their Enterprise Agreement. And waited. And waited.
Waiting too long
Microsoft provides a detailed explanation for their support of O365 trial tenants. The information can be found here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/office365/admin/subscriptions-and-billing/what-if-my-subscription-expires?view=o365-worldwide, but is best illustrated by the following diagram:
The “active” period runs 30 days, then the access is reduced as time goes by.
Basically, by the time our client resolved the technical and licensing problems, their trial tenant had entered the “Deprovisioned” phase. Because each tenant’s domain name is unique and cannot be reused in a new tenant, we needed options to “revive” the tenant.
Deprovisioned does not equal “Deleted”
If you can still log into the tenant, there is still hope! We logged into the tenant and saw that the users populated via AD Connect were still populated, but none of the applications (Exchange, SharePoint, etc.) were accessible.
What to do:
- Open an O365 support ticket from the Tenant’s support console.
- In the support ticket, request that the tenant be reactivated. Make sure you have your Tenant domain name and Licensing information (EA License ID, for example).
- The good news is Microsoft Support can activate a new Enterprise 5 (E5) trial in the existing tenant and give you another 30 days to set up your permanent licensing.
- The bad news is any content you loaded or application configuration you did is now gone.
For our client, there had been minimal work done in the tenant, so it didn’t take long to get back to original state and they were able to use their desired tenant name.
