Multiple Office 365 Tenant Considerations

Are you considering migrating your company to multiple Office 365 tenants?  This is a decision that should be taken seriously and given much consideration.  The primary reason why organizations should consider multiple tenants is when there is a global end-user base. Office 365 tenants are based in the confines of a single region, and an organization might want their end users’ mailboxes to be close to avoid the latency associated with traversing the Internet.  However, there are reasons why multiple tenants may be required.  The primary reason is to ensure at-rest data stays within the confines of a certain region to meet an organization’s local legislation.

Limitations when using multiple tenants:

  1. Multiple AADSync / ADFS servers.
  2. An AD user, contact or group can only be synced to one Office 365 tenant.
    1. This means that, on its own, DirSync won’t provide a full Global Address List (GAL) between all tenants.
  3. Accepted Domains and User Principal Name suffixes can’t be shared between multiple Office 365 tenants.

The primary benefit of having multiple tenants are:

  1. Autonomy and control of your own portal and services.
  2. Provides less complexity about managing admin roles on a large scale and can be less cumbersome.

There are many restrictions that you will need to consider if you decide to deploy multiple Office 365 tenants.  If you would like to learn more, please contact us at
