The Internet of Things (IoT) has continued to become a growing conversational topic in both business and socially. It has the potential to impact not only how we live but also how we work. Similar to the advent of “cloud computing,” however, for many people it seems futuristic and complicated. It doesn’t have to be! Let’s start with the basics – what is IoT?
Internet, Devices, and Data, Oh My!
Changes in the technical landscape are creating a perfect environment for IoT. Broadband Internet is becoming more widely available and the cost of connecting is decreasing. More and more devices are Wi-Fi enabled, and the costs of creating, purchasing, and maintaining those devices are also going down. Smartphones are being used 24×7 in our everyday lives by multiple generations.
Pretty much anything with an on/off switch is now connected to the Internet and potentially to other devices. You can look into your refrigerator while at the grocery store to see if you need milk. You can change the temperature of your home by clicking on an app on your phone while away on vacation. You can even interact with your pets and give them treats through a device while you are busy at work!
Gartner says that by 2020 there will be over 26 billion connected devices – can you imagine?
All of these devices provide data that can be consumed by other connected devices or captured for analytics. The applications are endless. However, the amount of data these devices generate is massive. Companies need to put together a solid strategy on how to store and interpret that data in order to translate it into knowledge that can be used to empower the business.
