File Restore on StorSimple

If you are using StorSimple for file access, restoring a deleted file is a fairly easy process, but is not necessarily intuitive.  Here are some tips to make the process go smoothly.

The restore procedure

Assuming you are using StorSimple as an ISCSI target for your file server:

  • Log onto your Azure portal.
  • Choose your device, go to ‘Settings’, and choose ‘Backup Catalog.’
  • In the Backup Catalog, select the volume, date and time of the backup you want to restore from.
  • Right click on the volume you chose and select ‘Clone’. Make sure that you have enough space to accommodate the new volume. Please note that depending on the size of the volume, it may take a few hours for the process to finish.
  • Once the process is complete, return to your file server, connect the new volume, initiate it, and assign a drive letter.
  • You can now browse the new volume and copy out the file or files you want to restore.

Things to consider

There are a few things to keep in my mind when initiating this type of restore:

  • Space – the new volume will use part of your allocated Azure storage space. Please make sure that you have enough space to accommodate this process.
  • The newly created volume will be part of your existing backup schedule. It will be backed up at your next scheduled backup.
  • Make sure to disconnect volume from file server before making cloned copy inactive and deleting from Azure.

StorSimple allows you to store your data in a hybrid scenario with your backups being handled automatically. While this helps to simplify your on-premises environment, certain functions that you were used to doing will change. Backup and restores will now be different, but still relatively easy to do.
