Top 5 BI Resolutions for 2017

It’s that time of year again.  We take a look back at the past year and figure out what went well and where we want to make improvements for the next year.  Lose some weight, give up bad habits, spend more time with family and friends.  It’s a good idea to take this same approach to business – putting in place goals for the New Year gets you off to a great start and helps make improvements all year long!

One area where you can focus these goals is around Business Intelligence (BI).  A robust BI solution can help you gain deeper insight into your data, transforming it into actionable intelligence and enabling you to share it across your organization.

Here are my top 5 suggestions for BI resolutions this year

1 – Revisit your BI strategy (or develop one if you don’t have one!). Before making new resolutions you should check the progress of the goals you already have in place.  What has been going well and what needs some tuning or a new strategy altogether?  We work with many of our clients on BI assessments and strategy engagements to help them get things back on track.

2 – Learn something new.  The Business Intelligence market has changed considerably over the past year and new tools and technologies are both being introduced and evolving at a rapid pace.  One of our New Year’s resolutions at Peters & Associates is to continue to publish blogs and white papers to give you some fast ways to get up to speed on your time.  We also have an event coming up on February 16th on Business Intelligence and IoT where you can learn while on your lunch break.

3 – Try something new.  Have you been evaluating a few different tools and just don’t know which one will work best for your business needs?  Why not start the year off with a BI pilot?  We can take an existing process within your organization and create a Power BI pilot where your end users can take it for a test drive using data and scenarios that are meaningful to them.

4 – Clean up your act.  This time of year, many people give up bad habits to improve their health and wellness.  When was the last time you looked at the health of your data?  Dashboards are wonderful tools, but if the quality of the data within them is poor you will find yourself making bad business decisions.  Start the year off fresh by letting us help with an assessment of the state of your data and a roadmap on how to improve it.

5 – Spend less, save more.  This common New Year’s resolution is also perfect for your BI approach.  We can help you leverage the tools and technologies you have to come up with a pragmatic approach for your organization or find cost effective solutions if the ones in house don’t fit your needs.  Additionally, with a solid BI solution you will quickly find savings, not only in time, but through the ability to have better insights into the key metrics of your organization.

More often than not we do a great job staying on track for the first month and then fall off the bandwagon.  Let us help support your commitment to achieving these resolutions! Please email me directly at to discuss further.

You can also join us on Feb. 16th at Gibson’s for lunch.  We will show you how you can get more out of your existing assets and transform your business through IoT by illustrating how a combination of tools and technology can help transform the data from your ‘things’ into actionable insight and business results.
