Microsoft Pass-Through Authentication and Seamless SSO

On December 7, 2016, Microsoft announced the public preview of Pass-Through Authentication and Seamless Single Sign on (SSO) for Office 365. While this feature is currently in preview, Peters & Associates IT Advisory Services can help you investigate and decide if this change might be right for your company.

What can this do for you?

First, this can dramatically simplify the authentication process for your users.  It will allow them to access resources in Office 365, without being prompted for credentials and having to implement Active Directory Federation Services or use a costly 3rd party provider. Secondly, it provides your company with a method for Highly Available and Secure Office 365 authentication without some of the costs normally associated with High Availability.

How to get started

While the authentication process will be greatly simplified, some scenarios may not be right for this type of implementation.  There should be some discussion and discovery before deciding to upgrade or switch to Pass-Through and Seamless SSO.

My Two Cents

In my opinion, Pass-Through Authentication and Seamless SSO, along with Azure Active Directory Premium, is being positioned as a direct competitor to other 3rd party SSO providers. I believe this will become the preferred solution for Office 365-only authentication and a worthy contender for other SSO scenarios. Most significantly, it may end up being cheaper based on Azure Active Directory Premium licensing already being owned as part of Office 365 E5 or EMS licensing.
