ExaGrid and Veeam Simplify Backup and Security for SMBs (3:03)

by | Feb 9, 2021 | Security

Cyberattacks and ransomware are as prevalent as ever and the targeting of backup data is commonplace. This year, secure your business by locking down your backups. On February 9th we discussed the better-together story of Veeam & ExaGrid. Backup and security for SMBs is stronger than ever with state-of-the-art backup technology and ransomware protection brought to you by Veeam and ExaGrid. By bundling these technologies with co-managed services from Peters & Associates, you can stay steps ahead of cybercriminals.

Setting the Table

Before diving into the nitty-gritty of backup and recovery, it’s important to outline why it is important to have a strong backup and recovery strategy in place. According to Datto’s 2017 State of the Channel Ransomware Report, 96% of organizations breached that had an attack were able to recover their backups. In the same year, 40% of those attacked who did not have a strategy in place, were either partially or completely unable to recover their files. It is not a matter of if but when your organization suffers a breach. Even though the aforementioned statistics are from 2017, it is suspected that the percentages are far greater.

At Peters & Associates, we build our security solutions and recommendations around the NIST cybersecurity framework. This helps customers who are in unregulated industries build a strong security strategy. The NIST framework is comprised of 6 steps:

  1. Identify
  2. Protect
  3. Detect
  4. Respond
  5. Recover

By building this foundation, you can then go on creating an Incident Response Plan (IRP) among other things. To learn more about IRPs, check out our blog.

Peanut Butter (Veeam)

Veeam has taken a customer-first approach and is constantly evolving to meet those needs. In looking to their customers for direction, Veeam has become an industry leader in the backup and recovery space. What sets Veeam apart from other backup and recovery solution providers is its vendor compatibility and data mobility. Veeam’s Cloud Data Management Platform is designed to meet the needs of fast-growing data and changing business needs.

Jelly (ExaGrid)

Even though having backups in the cloud is important, physical backups are equally as important. Exagrid offers the only tiered backup storage with a disk cache. As our presenter, Patrick Murray states:

Landing Zone for backup and restore performance tiered to a long-term retention repository for cost efficiencies as well as a scale-out storage architecture that scales as data grows. ExaGrid is the best of both worlds by offering both a performance and retention tier.

When using ExaGrid’s technology, as your need for backup and storage grows, so will ExaGrid. To further your protection, ExaGrid has built Veeam code into their solution. This means as an IT Admin, all you have to do in the event of an attack is:

  1. Stop backups & start recover mode
  2. Begin recovery using ExaGrid GUI or contact ExaGrid support
  3. Determine time of the event
  4. Find the last deduplicated backup before the event
  5. Start the restore process

The simple 5-step process makes recovery, as painless as possible.
