Businesses rely on solid disaster recovery (DRP) and business continuity (BCP) plans. Typically, strategies for fail-over and recovery can be a manual process that is time-consuming. Utilizing Azure Site Recovery Service (ASR) allows IT teams to automate and to provide various recovery options. Azure Site Recovery Services (ASR) include:
Site Recovery service: Site Recovery helps ensure business continuity by keeping business apps and workloads running during outages. Site Recovery replicates workloads running on physical and virtual machines (VMs) from a primary site to a secondary location. When an outage occurs at your primary site, you failover to a secondary location, and access apps from there. After the primary location is running again, you can fail back to it.
Backup service: The Azure Backup service keeps your data safe and recoverable.
This discussion will focus on Site Recovery service. Site Recovery can be used to replicate data, applications, and servers between:
- Azure regions
- On-premises servers/VMs to Azure
- On-premises servers/VMs to other on-premises servers/VMs
- AWS windows VMs to Azure
And can be used on:
- Physical servers
- VMware VMs
- Hyer-V VMs
Additionally, many applications have been tested and are supported for replication, such as:
- Active Directory & DNS
- Web applications
- Citrix XenApp & XenDesktop
Azure Site Recovery allows IT staff to input business requirements for Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO) to keep continuous and consistent replication. Recovery plans allow for bundling and prioritizing what fails-over and when. It can include dependencies so systems turn up and are ready to go. These plans provide the means to test individual applications prior to performing a full disaster recovery test.
Azure Site Recovery is feature-rich and only a very small subset is discussed here.
